Yeast Infection 101

Vaginal Yeast Infections: they’re itchy, uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Although no one really likes to talk about them, vaginal yeast infections are very common in women. 3 out of 4 women or 75% of women will have it at some point in their lifetime, some may experience 2 episodes in their life.

What causes yeast infections?

The vagina contains a healthy balance of bacteria and yeast. The female hormone, Estrogen, helps the bacteria called lactobacilli grow. These Lactobacilli kill harmful organisms to keep your vagina healthy. When the balance of bacteria and yeast is tipped, fungus called candida can grow out of control and cause yeast infection.

The following may change the pH balance and cause vaginal infection:

  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy, breast-feeding or menopause (or if you’re taking birth control pills)

  • The increase in sugar in people with diabetes cause the mucus membranes of your vagina can create a place for yeast to grow

  • Antibiotics can kill off many of the good bacteria that live in your vagina.

  • Douches and vaginal sprays: The use of these products can change the balance in your vagina.

  • A weakened immune system: If you are HIV-positive or have another immune system disorder, the yeast may also grow uncontrolled.

  • Sex: Though a yeast infection is not considered a sexually transmitted infection, it can be passed from person to person through sexual contact.

How do I know if I have a yeast infection?

Though Vaginal yeast infection is known to cause intense itch and discomfort, you may also experience any or all of the following:

  • Fishy odor

  • Burning, redness, and swelling of the vagina and the vulva

  • Burning sensation when you pee

  • Pain during sex

  • A thick, white, odorless discharge, similar to cottage cheese

How do I treat a yeast infection?

Here are some products you can use to help with yeast infection:

Yeast infection is triggered by overgrowth of bacteria in the vaginal area. Probiotics help because it contains live bacteria called Lactobacillus acidophilus that is essential in creating a healthy environment in your vagina.

  • Eat Yoghurt (Plain Greek Yoghurt is our recommended choice!)

Make sure you choose yogurt that contains less sugar because too much sugar can also fuel the growth of the Candida fungus.

  • Take oral probiotic supplements or suppositories

Take note that oral supplements take about 10 days to take full effect. If you are looking for quicker results, use probiotic vaginal suppositories to see results more quickly.

  • Use feminine hygiene products that contain probiotics

Wash your intimate area every day with Angelina pH Balancing Feminine Foam Wash to restore its natural pH.

Herbs and other natural remedies

Herbs have been proven for ages to treat various health problems - and vaginal problems are not an exception!

  • Oregano Aromatherapy

Mix 3-5 drops of oregano essential oil per ounce of carrier oil. Then, apply it to the skin in massage. It can also be inhaled through a diffuser. Do not apply this essential oil near your vagina.

Remember: Essential oils should NOT be taken orally. They’re meant to be inhaled as part of aromatherapy. While some studies are examining other ways to use oregano essential oils, at this time it’s recommended that you use it diluted in a carrier oil, such as olive or sweet almond oil.

  • Coconut Oil

Among its many healing properties, coconut oil also has antibacterial elements. Studies have shown that coconut oil is effective against C. Albicans.

For best results, be sure to buy pure, organic coconut oil. You can apply the oil directly to the affected area.

  • Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a popular ingredient in many products, and for good reason. It has properties that kill fungi, bacteria, and viruses.

Because it is so powerful, make sure to dilute tea tree oil with a carrier oil, such as jojoba or coconut oil. Do not use it if you have sensitive skin and stop use if irritation occurs. Vaginal suppositories that contain tea tree oil are also available.

  • Chinese herbs

Chinese have been known to use herbs to cure different kinds of illnesses. Herbalists use a combination of herbs to treat vaginal problems such as Herbal Leonuri, Folium Artemisiae Argyi, Fructus Cnidii, Chinese Cortex Phellodendri and Diels Angelica Sinensis which can all be found in Angelina pH Balancing Vaginal Gel.
